Special days

National zoo awareness day

National Zoo Awareness Day was founded on 31st August 1982 as a way to recognise the vital role that zoos play in preserving and protecting endangered species, through teaching conservation lessons which help to bring people closer to nature.
We all have lovely memories of visiting our local zoos when we were younger as part of a summer holiday activity or as part of your school trip, which is why it is so important that zoos should be honoured during this event because they hold fond and special memories for us all.
Here are some interesting facts about zoos and National Zoo Awareness Day
  1. It is believed that the Egyptians first had a taste of visiting zoos before they became the much-loved tourist attraction that we know them as today.
  2. In the 1900s National Parks were created, America built many of the first National Parks and decided to pass laws to preserve natural habitats.
  3. National Zoo Awareness Day is an opportunity for you to go on a day trip to your local zoo to witness the exotic animals of the world; it should be shared with your siblings, family members and friends.
But how can you celebrate National Zoo Awareness Day?
Many zoos usually arrange seminars for visitors to watch during this event so why not head to Edinburgh Zoo today and see what events they have planned for this special day?
The next time you visit Edinburgh Zoo, take pictures with your favourite animal and share them with us on social media.
