World Bee Day Celebration
May 20, 2024
Did you know that a third of the world’s food productions relies on bees?
Bees are extremely important to the health of the precious place that we all call home that bees have their own special day to honour this. World Bee Day takes place on the 20th May each year and its aim is to spread vital awareness of the importance of bees.
As part of World Bee Day, bee campaigners are asking the whole of the UK to help and protect these special insects.
Here are some interesting facts about bees, that you might not have known until today:
- Bees pollinate 75% of the world’s leading global crops such as; oilseed rape, apples, soft fruits, beans, courgettes, tomatoes and strawberries
- Bees are vital for maintaining the balance between living organisms such as human beings, plants and animals as well as their natural surroundings
- Bees help to reduce pollution levels
- Studies have proven that bees have become rapidly endangered – in 2015, the UN said that one million bee species face extinction
During the month of May, The British Beekeepers Association supports “No Mow May” where the general public is asked not to mow their garden lawns to allow wildflowers to grow to provide pollen and nectar as food for all of the pollinating insects.
If you own a large garden, or a suitable area of land then why not consider offering this space to beekeepers? See the images to see what else you can do to help protect bees.
