“Peatlands are very important because they provide a habitat for many different plants, insects and birds. They also absorb and store carbon dioxide – a major cause of climate change. Peat is a special type of mud that forms when plants die and break down, but peatlands have been damaged and destroyed across the world.” – BBC
Peatlands provide a huge carbon store that can make a big difference to climate change. However, over 80% of peatlands in the UK are damaged and do not function to their full potential.
Peatlands cover over 20% of Scotland’s land area. And even if we often complain about the bog when we are out hiking, they may indeed be a precious solution to climate change!

“We will all be impacted by the climate crisis one day, though in very different ways. We are sailing the same troubled waters, but in very different boats. Vulnerable countries that contribute the least to climate change suffer the most.”
– Brianna Fruean, Environmentalist and Activist from Samoa
